A new volcanic eruption south-west of Reykjavik

4.8.2022

Information for Erasmus+ and ESC participants in the area

More than seven months after the volcanic eruption in Geldingardalir ended, a new eruption began on 3 August 2022. It is located in the same area as the one that occured in 2021: on the Reykjanes peninsula approx. 30 km from the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik. This is an unpopulated area and there does not seem to be any immediate danger posed to people or infrastructure.

In case Erasmus+ and ESC participants who are located in Iceland at the moment need information on these events, we recommend that they stay informed e.g. through the website of the Icelandic meteorological office, and/or the national broadcaster's website and Facebook account, and follow instructions from the Icelandic emergency services and local authorities.

For information on any potential effect on air transport, please consult the website of Keflavik Airport.
